Using the Sliding Scale

We offer these considerations as a guide when reflecting on where you might place yourself on the scale:

Consider contributing more on the scale if you:

  • can comfortably meet all of your basic needs

  • belong to a sponsoring organisation or are employed full-time

  • have investments, retirement accounts, or inherited wealth

  • travel recreationally

  • have access to family financial support in times of need

  • work part-time by choice

  • own the home you live in

  • benefit from education, privilege, or class background that increases your earning power

Consider contributing less on the scale if you:

  • have difficulty covering basic expenses

  • are supporting children or other dependents

  • carry significant debt

  • have medical costs not covered by insurance

  • are an elder with limited financial support

  • are an unpaid community organiser

  • have unstable housing or limited access to transport

  • have not had the means to take time off or a holiday due to financial strain
