Using the Sliding Scale
We offer these considerations as a guide when reflecting on where you might place yourself on the scale:
Consider contributing more on the scale if you:
can comfortably meet all of your basic needs
belong to a sponsoring organisation or are employed full-time
have investments, retirement accounts, or inherited wealth
travel recreationally
have access to family financial support in times of need
work part-time by choice
own the home you live in
benefit from education, privilege, or class background that increases your earning power
Consider contributing less on the scale if you:
have difficulty covering basic expenses
are supporting children or other dependents
carry significant debt
have medical costs not covered by insurance
are an elder with limited financial support
are an unpaid community organiser
have unstable housing or limited access to transport
have not had the means to take time off or a holiday due to financial strain
